Career Options in Philosophy
Often, students express worries about what they will do after acquiring a Bachelor’s
Degree. Studying philosophy is an attractive option. Acquiring a philosophy degree is
valuable not least because the jobs and career avenues it opens are wider than
subjects where specialization narrows the job and career options. Students who have
studied philosophy agree that the subject
• Improves logical and critical thinking in problem solving
• Trains one to develop an analytical bent of mind
• To speak and write persuasively leading to independent research
Logical, critical and analytical thinking skills are crucial ‘transferable skills’ that
employers value as essential and desirable for entering the workforce. Apart from these
skills, studying philosophy sharpens the students’ ability to reason effectively for
competitive examinations. The question topmost on students’ mind is: what can I do
with a graduate degree in philosophy?
Students who graduate with philosophy can secure work in a variety of occupations that
are well paying and challenging. Here is a look at some attractive career options that
ex-students of philosophy past have made their career.
1. Recruitment consultant (MBA)
2. Advertising industry
3. Content writing and development in e-learning
4. Career in Law
5. Lectureship at College or University level/ Junior College
6. Indian Civil Services (State government or government of India)
7. Yoga instructor
8. Freelance journalism
9. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) – advocacy and social work
A Philosophy major degree has many more occupational avenues to offer students than
is commonly acknowledged.
