QUALITY ASSURANCE

A Postgraduate Diploma in ‘Quality Assurance in the Foods Industry’ was introduced in 1993 as part of Sophia’s quest for relevance and excellence. It was conceived as a memorial to the Golden Jubilee of the College. The course was expanded to include a Pharmaceuticals component and later an Allied Industries component seeking to meet the stringent quality needs of today’s globalized fast growing Pharmaceutical / Allied Industry. It prepares science graduates to enter industry as Quality professionals. The one-and-a-half-year full time course, run in collaboration with leading Foods, Pharmaceuticals and Allied Industries, is designed to train students in the various facets of Quality Assurance from raw materials to finished products. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to include the latest developments in the field.

The course is conducted in the ‘Sophia College - Geeta Israni Centre of Quality Assurance’, a modern facility, developed through a generous grant from the Managing Director, Blue Cross Laboratories.

Faculty with years of experience in industry, academia and government bodies give students a holistic view of all aspects of Quality Assurance. Practical skills and hands-on training in various instrumentation techniques are imparted during in-house laboratory sessions and through experiential learning in Public Testing Laboratories.

Students are introduced to the basics of Management and trained in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to help them achieve professional success.

Self-study, creativity and communication skills are enhanced through a variety of activities with personal attention to each student.

Special emphasis is placed on inculcation of a strong value system, development of soft-skills and cooperative learning.

The course concludes with students receiving hands-on Industry experience in a four-month internship, two months each in a Foods and Pharmaceuticals/ Allied Industry.

The growing number of Food, Pharmaceutical and Allied industries, together with rising concern and awareness regarding Quality issues, has led to an increased demand for Quality professionals. Since its inception, the course has attempted to cater to this need and Sophia students of Quality Assurance now occupy a variety of senior positions in Industries in India and abroad.
