Dr Sushama Deo
MA DHE PhD MS-ACIT
My years at Ramnarain Ruia College as a student of Philosophy and Logic impressed upon me to take up teaching then, and that way, stay actively connected to the subjects that I liked the most.
I was fortunate to serve as a Teacher at Sophia Jr. College from 1981 to 2015. I had the good fortune of being actively involved as member of Board of Studies in Philosophy for the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Pune. In this capacity it was possible to network with teachers across Maharashtra.
Watching younger generation’s grapple on the fundamental questions was a joy. I am grateful for this experience.
I was awarded a Ph,D. (Pune University) for my thesis on the Philosophy and Educational insights of J. Krishnamurti.
During the same time as I taught Philosophy, I got interested in looking at some fundamental issues of life spiritually. I now spend most of my time pursuing my spiritual interests as well as my hobbies like sports and music.

I always wanted to be a Teacher, I studied in St Xavier's College. When I was told there is a vacancy in Sophia College that was in August 1986, I applied. My interview was conducted by Dr Sr Livi Rodrigues, Sr Teresa and Dr Chitre. It was a nice interview. I was offered a job as Teacher in Physics on 9th August 1986 and taught Physics for 34 years in Sophia Jr. College. It was a memorable 34 years of my life.
My students loved me, enjoyed my lectures, and I taught Physics practicals with sincerity and dedication. I have made an effort to inculcate the finest values in my students. I have always reminded them of the most important thing in life - is to be a good human being.
I retired from Sophia Jr. College in July 2020. I am happy and content, passionate about teaching, I continue to write books in Physics, and teach. I am equally passionate about my Hobbies being a numismatist, philatelist, and notaphilist.
I thank God for all the love bestowed on me.

Ms. Asha Kanodia
M.A., B.Ed.
I came to Mumbai in 1973 after my marriage. Prior to this I taught at Lucknow University. My connection with Sophia started in 1973, when I was employed as a part-time teacher in the degree college for Economics for about 6 months. Later I shifted to Kolkata, where I taught for about 3 years in a local Jr. College. I returned to Mumbai in 1992 and was most fortunate to return to Sophia College, in the Junior College, to teach Economics. I worked in Sophia Jr. College until 2008 when I retired. During my days in Sophia, I also wrote published Economics Textbooks for 11th and 12th standards.
While at Sophia College I was really inspired by Dr. Z. Jasdanwala (Head, Economics Department), who was an excellent teacher, role model and guide. I am very grateful to Dr. Sr. Livi Rodrigues, Sr. Teresa and Sr. Celia, who were always there to support me.
I really cherish my days in Sophia as I fell in love with the beautiful campus from the very first day when I entered its gate. I felt very much at peace. My days In Sophia helped me to grow as a human being. My aim as a teacher was to nurture student’s interest in Economics. I am happy that some of my students started loving Economics as a subject. I am also very grateful to my friends in Sophia who guided me on the path of spirituality.
Since my retirement, I have basically devoting my time to my spiritual interests, travelling to different places in India and abroad, and spending quality time with my children and their families.

CUC: THE COLLEGE UNION COMMITTEE

The Sophia College Students' Association was originally started in July 1944 as it was felt necessary and expedient that there should be an organisation where students could develop the qualities of leadership and inculcate a spirit of democracy.

The CUC or the ‘College Union Committee’ is the body which is completely elected and/or nominated by the students of Sophia College (Autonomous). It comprises Class Representatives (CRs), Club Secretaries, Cultural Committee (PRISM) leaders, and the Public Relations Team. It is headed by a Core team which includes the Student Body President, Cultural Secretary, General Secretary and Treasurer. The Principal, Coordinator of Students, and College Warden are ex-officio members and act as advisors without the right to vote.

The CUC seamlessly adapts to any situation which is faced by the students. The CUC is directly or indirectly in charge of all the extracurricular activities that take place in Sophia College (Autonomous). The numerous clubs and associations create enriching opportunities for students on campus all year round. The CUC organises and assists the organisation and implementation of any activity that comes under the purview of Sophia College (autonomous) such as Teacher’s Day, College Day, Convocation etc.

The CUC plays a monumental role in bridging the gap between the students and the College. The Core Members of the CUC are also a part of various college committees, such as the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Grievance Committee, Placement Cell, Kaleidoscope etc, which ensures appropriate representation of the student's voice at every stage.

The College Union Committee is a force to be reckoned with, which strives to uphold Sophia ethos and values. Being a part of this committee is considered to be one of the most prestigious positions that a student can hold in the college.
