Learning Sources - SCWSD

The Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies & Development (SCWSD) at the Sophia College for Women (affiliated to the University of Mumbai) fosters academic research, teaching, advocacy, and community partnerships in support of women’s empowerment and to help end gender discrimination.

About SCWSD:
Started in 2001, SCWSD now has a number of faculty affiliates, several courses and a multitude of students who participate in our programmes.  We have a growing national reputation in the women's and gender studies community.

Despite numerous legal and social advances over the last several decades, women continue to face disparities in educational attainment and career advancement relative to men.  Women remain significantly under-represented in numerous professions and in public life.  Understanding the barriers to women’s success and creating programmes that promote women’s leadership requires good women’s studies and gender studies research, and the presence of strong role models within the education system.  SCWSD is dedicated to closing the leadership gap through a variety of initiatives that:
  • Promote groundbreaking interdisciplinary research in the study of women and gender
  • Support undergraduate women students in developing their leadership potential
  • Encourage participation of students, professors, and community members in our programmes which explore a wide range of gender-related topics and issues

By offering a variety of programmes and events that allow our students and community members to share their experience and expertise, SCWSD creates a learning and research environment that is responsive to the lives and concerns of the people in our community.

We recognize that ending gender discrimination requires ending the related discriminations against disability, ethnicity, race, caste and class.  In support of our vision, we seek to generate interdisciplinary educational spaces for faculty, students, and community members to create alliances across different faculties and come together to imagine new possibilities.  Three core focuses help to realise this vision:

Library, Documentation and Research:  The Centre has a well-stocked, up-to-date library consisting of books, journals, and audio-visual material.  Internet facility and information retrieval are available in the library.  It is open to both men and women desirous of doing research in women’s studies.

Since its inception, research has been part of the multiple activities undertaken by the Centre.  In the recent past, SCWSD has created a number of research paper series in specific subject areas, such as Gender and Human Rights Education and its interface with health, development, peace and safety and public administration.  Through these research topics and through collaboration with other research centres, we promote faculty research and interaction with students.  By bringing together scholars trained in different methodologies and disciplinary traditions around a common theme, interdisciplinary research promises new opportunities for innovation and insight.

Publications:
Our research paper series is intended to promote interdisciplinary research in its many manifestations, on issues related to women, and on relationships between gender and social discrimination.  Our annual publication, Urdhva Mula (Translation: Roots Upwards) is an internationally listed academic journal (ISSN No. 2277-7954).  It seeks to encourage contributors to write on subjects related to gender studies and women’s issues in a manner that is accessible and appealing to students and professionals alike.

Instruction and Courses:
All programmes of the centre are aimed at broadening the mind and/or employability.  SCWSD offers both courses related to feminist theory and skills development on the one hand, and courses for vocational training of less privileged women on the other.

Outreach Activities:
These include short-term Certificate Courses, Seminars, Workshops, Orientation Programmes, Field Visits, Exposure Programmes and Outreach Activities for capacity building and remedial learning.  Networking with institutions that work with issues of gender justice and empowerment of women, targeting old areas of conflict, suffering and exploitation, and identifying new problem areas are a part of the outreach activities undertaken by the Centre.Certificate Courses offered by the Centre:

  • Social advocacy
  • Community partnerships
Our vision is to be a world-class centre for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and activism in women’s and gender studies.

SCWSD also works closely with other interdisciplinary programmes and research centres both on campus and outside.  Interested students, faculty, and community members are invited to contact us to find out more about our courses, programmes and events

Giving to SCWSD:

Get Involved: Your contribution to the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development will help in our efforts to work towards a more gender-just environment.  Gifts designated for the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development help preserve and enhance programming, course development, fund endowments, and support outreach initiatives.

Your contribution will help SCWSD to reach its goal of establishing a permanent funding structure for our programmes.  With additional support, the Centre can build on its considerable teaching and research strengths, and continue its trajectory towards academic excellence and community programming.

Endowments: to the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies & Development are a sound investment in a better future.  With an endowed gift, you provide permanent support for the Centre.  Your gift is invested — never spent — and each year a distribution is made to your chosen programme or area.  Investment earnings above the dividend rate help the endowment value grow over time, to keep pace with inflation and maintain your endowment’s spending power.

N. B.  Cheques are to be made out in the name of ‘Society for the Higher Education of Women in India’ (the Trust that runs Sophia College).  The 80G certificate and receipt will be issued by the Trust.

Any donation over Rs. 20,000/- has to be by cheque payment.  Donations below this amount are also accepted in cash.
