Our Courses - Q. A.
The postgraduate ‘Quality Assurance’ (QA) course, a product of Sophia’s quest for relevance and excellence, was conceptualized as an academic memorial of the Golden Jubilee of the college (1990 – 1991) with a view to widening career opportunities for both men and women science graduates.
The course was started in response to the growing need for trained quality personnel in industry. A dedicated panel of advisors from industry and the college gave form and life to the idea, and in 1993, the first batch of students was admitted to the post graduate diploma course in “Quality Assurance in Food Industry” which was later expanded to include the pharmaceuticals component to meet the stringent quality needs of today’s globalized fast growing pharmaceutical industry.
This is a one-and-a-half year full-time autonomous course spanning four terms and is run in collaboration with various Food and Pharmaceutical Industries. The curriculum includes the basic elements of Quality Assurance, using the “Systems” approach as it applies to industry. Starting with raw materials, the course takes the students through the stages of on-line production and packaging, to finished products and the legal aspects associated with quality control. Emphasis is placed on the latest trends in QA and on the laboratory skills and techniques required in industry.
Students get hands on experience in modern instrumentation and laboratory techniques including training in both public testing laboratories and foods and pharmaceuticals industries.
The pioneering efforts in training quality personnel were recognized and a generous donation from industry facilitated the establishment of an exclusive QA unit. The “Sophia College – Geeta Israni Centre of Quality Assurance” was set up and was inaugurated by Mr. N.H. ISRANI, Managing Director, Blue Cross Laboratories on 13th October 2007.
This innovative programme offers a continuously updated dynamic curriculum and is run in close collaboration with industry and has received enthusiastic and consistent support from both food and pharmaceutical industries. Students from the course have made successful careers for themselves in the field of Quality Assurance which is emerging as a national and global priority.
The course is open to both men and women with a B.Sc. degree in any of the following: Chemistry, Microbiology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany Zoology or any other biological sciences.
Prospectus cum application forms can be obtained from 1st June onwards between 10 am to 12 noon from the Sophia College general office. The last date for submission of application is fifteen days after declaration of T.Y. B. Sc. results.
